ABOUT OUR TOURS
How are our tours different?

OpenCity Tours offers the opportunity to create your own tour! Your personal guide to New York City’s art and architecture, history and culture, food and fun! All tours are personalized according to your interests and needs. See NYC with a different perspective!

Why walking tours?

Walking tours are our thing, because if you really want to see NY, do it on foot! NYC is one of the easiest cities to navigate on foot, and there's certainly no shortage of interesting sights around every corner—from awesome street art and graffiti in NYC to the top haunted places in NYC and the most beautiful NYC buildings. Whether you're a New York native or a first-time tourist, see a part of the city you've never seen before with the best walking tours NYC has to offer. At OpenCity we offer walking tours that cover most of New York City and we are adding more tours all the time. We have many different styles of walking tours, from city tours to history, architectural and food tours for whatever curbs your interest. We often make use of public transportation to move around, whether it is the subway, bus or boats. Your guide is always standing right next to you and interacting with the group. He/she not only gives you great information but is available to answer all your questions, whether about the history or where to get the best cocktails. This is a unique intimate personal experience. It’s like having a friend show you around!

Do you offer only walking tours?

Based on your ideas, we can design a Special Tour for you, your friends and family, or your group. City Tours using taxi, boat and public transportation can be tailored to your needs to any part of the city. But if you are looking for a more relaxed cruise across the city we can arrange service with a SUV or minivan (depending on the size of your group).

What happens if it's bad weather?

We are happy to guide a tour in any weather. One of the benefits of a private tour is that you can request that we pause in a coffee shop to warm up or cool off. However if weather conditions are dangerous, we will recommend rescheduling.

What does it mean that tours are "customizable"?

You can express a preference for the theme or route of your tour. If you let us know in advance that there are particular places you want to make sure you see or if you’d like the tour to have a certain emphasis, we can alter the itinerary accordingly. In general, without special requests, we mix different elements together, focusing on many diverse time periods and subjects.

What's the best tour for younger children?

Any tour can be made very child friendly, but consider Central Park or our Food Tour.

What tour is best for field trips or student group?

All History tours: the New Amsterdam Tour, 9/11 Memorial, the Underground Tour and the Liberty Tour with a visit to the Ellis Island Immigration Museum are all suited for schools and youth groups excursions. We are happy to adapt any tour to your age level and curricular needs. Check our website for new tours.

What's the best tour for someone in the city for the first time?

The City Tour is designed for you. But, if you want a shorter tour, consider Lower Manhattan, which traces the history of the city from its origins to the present, while seeing Wall Street, the Statue of Liberty, and other famous sites.

What's the best tour for someone who already knows a lot about the city?

We have history tours and architecture tours, art, music tours and food tours, you’ll learn new things on every tour, even when visiting your own neighborhood.

Should I tell other how I liked the tour?

Yes, let us know how we did! We thrive on word of mouth. Share your tour experience in your favorite social media channel, or even better, gives us a rave review on TripAdvisor. We hope it was an enjoyable experience and to see you again soon!

LOGISTICS: WHERE, WHEN, HOW, WHAT!
Where do the tours meet?

We can pick you up in any place you wish, (but that’s all time taken from the tour!) or we can meet at a specified meeting point. Each tour has a different departure/meeting place. We specify the exact meeting place when we confirm a tour booking. Meeting sites and subway directions for tours can also be found with the tour descriptions. All tours begin at or near subway stations. Most tours do not conclude where they began. We will provide directions to subways, local sites, or back to the meeting point at the end of the tour.

How will I recognize the guide?

Finding your OpenCity guide is easy, we carry notebooks with maps and photographs with OpenCity’s logo on it. We will be at the designated meeting location as specified in each tours description.

What times do tours start?

Ususally tours start at 9:00 in the morning or 2:00 in the afternoon, but as they are private tours they can start as earlier in the morning, or later in the evening, based on your preference. Almost all tours work best in the daylight. From May through September, feel free to consider as late as a 4:00 or 5:00 PM start for any 2/3 hour tour; it will definitely still be light for the duration.

Where will the tour end?

Most tours do not end at the place where they start. Be sure to let us know either in advance or at the beginning of the tour if you would like the tour to end where it started, at a certain restaurant, etc. Of course, we are always happy to direct you to the subway or a taxi at the end of a tour.

Time and distance?

Most tours last from approximately two to three hours and walk between one and three miles. We maintain a moderate walking pace, stopping at various sites along the tour. Most tours will be conducted outdoors (except for museum visits and subway tours) so please dress appropriately. No matter the length of the tours walking will be at a leisurely pace with frequent stops. The guide will meet you at a specified address; directions and travel advice are provided when you reserve your tour.

Are children allowed on your tours?

Children of all ages are welcome to join our tours. Please note that some streets and sidewalks are narrow and may be difficult to navigate with a stroller. Some tours, however, may not be suited for small children. Refer to the tours page for a detailed description.

Can I bring my dog?

We love dogs! Well-behaved and leashed dogs are welcome on our outdoor walking tours. Dogs are not allowed inside any food establishments on the Food/Beer Tours.

Is smoking allowed?

Since tours are private we leave it up to you, however remember that smoking is now illegal in New York City Parks and on city owned property.

Bathrooms?

We can stop for bathroom breaks during our tours whenever the need arises. Most of our tours begin near public bathrooms or restaurants in which there are bathrooms. Consider NYC is not the best city around when it comes to public bathrooms!

RESERVATIONS
How far in advance do I need to book?

You can book as far in advance as you like. You are welcome to contact us as late as the “day-of”, sometimes we will have same day or next day availability and sometimes we won’t, but it never hurts to ask. We will try to accommodate any last minute requests, however availability is not guaranteed.

When will I back from you about my tour inquiry?

Most emails are responded to within half a day, if 48 hours have gone by and you haven’t heard from us, feel free to email again, in case your email has gotten lost in cyberspace. If it’s urgent, give us a call.

Is there a penalty for canceling or rescheduling a tour?

Our tours are usually refundable if canceling with 7 days notice. See details at the CANCELLATION POLICY.

How do I know that my tour is confirmed?

After making a reservation and payment we send a confirmation mail with all the details regarding your tour. If you know when and where you are meeting your guide, then your tour is confirmed.

Can you match me up with another group?

Unfortunately, it is not possible for us to do this. We offer each tour only as a personal tour for the client making the booking, and whomever he or she wishes to bring.

How large a group can you accomodate?

We have set a limit of 8 persons per group, This group size means you have more exclusive experiences and do more sightseeing. Your guide is always standing right next to you and interacting with the group. He/she not only gives you great information but is available to answer all your questions, whether about the history or where to get the best cocktails. This is a unique intimate personal experience. It’s like having a friend show you around! But if you have a larger group or a school class, we will be glad to accomadate you. Call us for rates.

PAYMENTS
What are the costs of a tour?

All prices, with the exception of food/beer tours which are per person, are per tour for a group of 8 people maximum. For larger groups contact us for rates and availability. Discounts are available for student groups and parties larger than 12 people (please see individual tour descriptions).

How do I pay?

You can pay through paypal or with a money transfer when you book the tour. We are happy to invoice in advance, and/or to provide a receipt upon payment—just let us know what you require.

Is it okay to tip your tour guide?

Tipping is always optional. But if you have a great time and want to thank your tour guide, gratuities are very much appreciated.

What is not included in the tour?

Museum tours do not include entrance fees. Transportation fees during the tours are not included. Refer to the tours page for a detailed description.
